Katie implements attendance policies that disregard doctor’s notes and requires workers to be available 14 solid days to earn 4 points back. She must have forgotten what it was like to balance parenthood and life while trying to earn a living. Did she have alot of help so she is unaware? Maybe. Was she on call 24/7/365?
Did you know that calling off on Mother’s Day is 7 points in the new policy for unassigned service and 10 for assigned service?? If you have an emergency and lay off on call or miss a call on Mother’s Day, it is 20 points. I wonder if Katie has ever missed Mother’s Day with her babies? I know a female conductor who has, and several dads who are never there.
I wonder if Katie has ever sat in a dirty motel on Christmas day for 20 hours by herself with no relief crews or vans available to get her home while her family celebrated together 300 miles away?? Has Katie ever been punished by her employer on a holiday because she worked but they had no plan to get her home? If Katie claims holiday pay for working on Labor Day, does she also lose a personal leave day she earned? My husband does.
I wonder if Katie Farmer has ever had to switch cars on a 2 man crew instead of a safe and proper 3 man crew? I wonder if she would be OK with her husband working in a job every day that could potentially kill or injure him, while doing more with less and exhausted??
I wonder if Katie Farmer thanked the 2 man crew in Texas who cut away 20 methane fuel cars lthat were on fire earlier this month?? That 2 man crew acted quickly so that 20 fuel cars burned instead of 96! Does she understand that an engineer with PTC cannot do that? Katie wants to cut railroad crews down to just one person! I wonder if she cares about public safety as much as profit?
I wonder if Katie Farmer is an empathic human being who made a mistake and signed off on policy that she didn’t read carefully or consider how it would hurt families?? I wonder if she is a big enough person to admit she made a mistake? I wonder if I should give her the benefit of the doubt? I wonder why she hasn’t emailed me back with a thoughtful response, assuring me that everything is going to be OK and that she does care?

I wonder if she will make me proud? I wonder if I will ever be able to say that the CEO of BNSF is a strong female leader who respects the needs of her workers and their families?
So far, Katie is increasing profits while her workforce is struggling and hundreds are furloughed all over the country. What is Katie going to do when she can’t switch a car or run an engine and the crews won’t either? Would she put her husband in danger to get freight moved, even if it meant cutting corners and putting his life at risk?? The company will lose millions if he doesn’t!
Katie, the ball is in your court. Woman to woman, mother to mother, wife to wife… What are you going to do?? You can pave the way as a female leader with a family friendly corporation! You can still profit in the millions and revise your policy or you can be just like the rest, greedy and selfish with a workforce who has no respect for you at all.
