What words of advice does Warren Buffet have for a 50 year old locomotive engineer who has been running trains for 29 years??
The company he runs trains for just reported record profits in 2021. Their operating income for the year was $8.8 billion, a 13.7% increase from 2020. Revenue increased 11.6%, to $22.5 billion.
That company expects railroad crews to be available 95% of the time, most never know when they will go to work or get home from work. They just reduced the the amount of UNPAID days a worker can take to recuperate, attend funerals, or recover from the flu from 84 days per year to 22.
Warren Buffet is worth $117 Billion, and “self made.” He talks a lot about a healthy mind and body. He is 91 years old and the most successful investor in history. I have to believe he knows what he is talking about.
Does he know that his company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns the railroad who is hitting record profits at the expense of my husband’s mental and physical health? Is he aware that 17,000 workers are begging for work/ life balance and the railroad he owns sued them in court, silencing them and their families??
Does Warren Buffet understand the demand being put on railroad workers is a recipe for destroying American families and sending our men and women to an early grave due to the intense expectations of the railroad and the unsafe working conditions? I can’t survive losing another railroad worker I love right before or after retirement. I can’t do it.
Families are suffering. Workers are exhausted and feeling hopeless. Even Warren Buffet says, if we don’t take care of ourselves we are going to fall apart. I can’t watch the man I love, my person, fall apart to feed our family and take kindly to Warren’s advice. I feel like he must have no idea what the workers who contribute to his wealth and success are going through.
We are self made too, Warren! We make less than 1% annually than you are worth but our mental health matters. I emailed you in January asking for help. You must have been busy that day.
Would you respond to me now?? I could really use some advice. 17,000 railroad workers and their families are in need of work/life balance. Are you the guy with the answers? This article leads me to believe you are.
What would you tell a child who is already subject to a custody agreement, why Daddy can’t meet his visitation agreement AND provide health care and child support? What would you tell a daughter who just wants her dad to see her play one soccer game but he can’t ever be there because of repercussions at work? My mom battled cancer and I battled alone because my husband was in a motel room over 300 miles away waiting for a train home on most of the hardest days. What do you think that did to my mental health and my marriage?
Warren, please. You have to do better. I have to believe you know these workers deserve to be heard. They deserve a fair contract. They deserve to make better living and have a quality of life while earning you and your investors billions. They deserve to work for an employer who does not demand 95% of their time without fearing suspension or termination.
You didn’t email me back in January. I may have had the wrong address. Maybe you can respond to me here? Me… And the families of 17,000 workers who deserve better.
I don’t need $117 billion. We need to feel like when they go to work they are safe. And yes, we need a damn raise too!
I’ll be waiting for your response, Mr. Buffet. I am hopeful
“You have only one mind and one body for the rest of your life,” Buffett says. “If you aren’t taking care of them when you’re young, it’s like leaving that car out in hailstorms and letting rust eat away at it. If you don’t take care of your mind and body now, by the time you’re 40 or 50, you’ll be like a car that can’t go anywhere.”-Warren Buffet
